Maryland Boating Certification Practice Exam

Wearing a life jacket is always crucial while on a vessel because it provides essential buoyancy and increases your chances of survival in the event of an accident or capsize. Life jackets are designed to keep a person afloat, and since emergencies can happen at any time, having one on increases safety regardless of the conditions. It's important to remember that many accidents occur unexpectedly, and having a life jacket readily worn ensures immediate protection.

In contrast, while swimming and engaging in water sports can also be potentially hazardous activities that warrant life jacket use, those situations can be more controlled compared to being on a vessel, where the risk factors are elevated due to factors like waves, other boats, and the distance from shore. Similarly, only wearing a life jacket during rough weather may lead to dangerous situations during calm conditions when a person might also be at risk. Therefore, consistent life jacket use while on board a vessel is the safest practice.
